Tearing (Dacryocystis) Management in Tampa, FL

Tearing of the eyes can cause irritation and may leave you vulnerable to more serious conditions. At Eyelid Surgeons of Tampa Bay, we offer tearing management services to help patients manage and overcome this condition. We welcome patients from St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tampa, FL.

What is Tearing?

Tearing, also called dacryocystitis, is a condition characterized by frequent tearing of the eyes. This condition is rarely serious, but it can cause an inconvenience due to frequent discomfort, irritation, or redness in the eyes. In some cases, tearing may even impact your vision.

Tearing is often a result of an issue with the tear ducts, such as a blockage, that prevents them from draining properly. At Eyelid Surgeons of Tampa Bay, we can diagnose the cause of your tearing and recommend an effective management treatment to help you achieve relief.

Am I A Good Candidate for Tearing Management?

If you are experiencing tearing that is affecting your quality of life, you may be a good candidate for tearing management. However, the best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate for these services is to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Mohadjer.

During your consultation, Dr. Mohadjer will assess your condition in order to determine if tearing management is a good fit for you. At this point, we will be able to help you schedule your treatment or find a suitable alternative.

What is Tearing Management Like?

Tearing is often caused by the tear ducts, which makes treatment fairly easy to predict and perform. For patients with minor tear duct obstructions, we may recommend the manual drainage of the tear ducts. This treatment often produces quick results with minimal office time, and requires no downtime.

For more severe cases, surgery may be the best option. Surgery involves an incision near the tear ducts, through which we will place a small implant to help prop the tear duct open. This will facilitate the proper drainage of the tear ducts, eliminating tearing.

What is the Tearing Management Recovery Process Like?

Minor tearing management treatments require little to no downtime, so you will be able to resume your normal activities immediately after your appointment. When surgery is required, however, you may experience some bruising and swelling that can last for about a week or two. We will also recommend that you take brief time off of work and other activities to rest for a few days. However, even with surgery, you will be able to return to your normal activities shortly after treatment.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from Tearing Management?

The goal of tearing management is to eliminate blockages in the tear ducts and produce long-lasting relief. This relief is often immediate, or will develop within a few days of treatment. We cannot guarantee that these treatments will prevent future blockages, but they should eliminate the current symptoms. If you frequently develop blockages in the tear ducts, we may provide extra services or recommendations to minimize your risk of developing additional blockages.
