What is Biopsy and Lump Excision?

A biopsy is the removal and testing of a lump or growth in the body. If you have developed an unusual lump in the eyelids or in the surrounding oculofacial region, we may recommend a biopsy. This procedure allows us to test the growth to ensure that it is not harmful. After analyzing the lump, we will be able to recommend an appropriate treatment to either address the cause of the growth or eliminate it altogether.

Am I A Good Candidate for a Biopsy?

If you have developed an unusual lump in the skin, especially if it is causing discomfort, you may want to consider a biopsy. However, the best way to determine if you are a suitable candidate for these services is to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Mohadjer.

During your consultation, Dr. Mohadjer will assess your condition in order to determine if a biopsy a good fit for you. At this point, we will be able to help you schedule your treatment or find a suitable alternative.

What is the Biopsy and Excision Procedure Like?

The excision and biopsy process will begin with numbing the area of the skin where the growth is found. The type of anesthetic used will depend on the exact location and size of the lump. After the skin is numbed, we will use surgical techniques to remove the lump from the skin. Then, we will send it to a pathology lab for analysis to determine the type of lesion and to assess whether or not any further treatment is warranted.

Although rare, the primary reason for testing these lumps is to detect the presence of cancer. The excision process is relatively quick, and we will perform the biopsy tests over the following days.

What is the Biopsy and Excision Recovery Like?

The excisional removal of lumps is fairly common, and we are often able to perform this treatment without the need for any downtime or recovery. You may experience some minor swelling or discomfort after the excision, but patients are typically able to return to normal activities immediately after their appointment.

What Kind of Results Can I Expect from the Biopsy and Excision?

The excision process will eliminate some or all of the targeted lump. In the days following treatment, the biopsy tests will determine if further treatment is needed. If it is discovered that further treatment is needed, we will contact you in order to discuss the appropriate treatments and determine the optimal treatment plan.
